Analyzing perceptual organization in information graphics

چکیده
Received: 24 November 2003 Revised: 30 January 2004 Accepted: 8 March 2004 Abstract We propose a new method for assessing the perceptual organization of information graphics, based on the premise that the visual structure of an image should match the structure of the data it is intended to convey. The core of our method is a new formal model of one type of perceptual structure, based on classical machine vision techniques for analyzing an image at multiple resolutions. The model takes as input an arbitrary grayscale image and returns a lattice structure describing the visual organization of the image. We show how this model captures several aspects of traditional design aesthetics, and we describe a software tool that implements the model to help designers analyze and refine visual displays. Our emphasis here is on demonstrating the model’s potential as a design aid rather than as a description of human perception, but given its initial promise we propose a variety of ways in which the model could be extended and validated. متن کاملFactorial Coding of Color in Primary Visual Cortex
We introduce the notion of Morton-style factorial coding and illustrate how it may help understand information integration and perceptual coding in the brain. We show that by focusing on average responses one may miss the existence of factorial coding mechanisms that become only apparent when analyzing spike count histograms. We show evidence suggesting that the classical/non-classical receptiv...
متن کاملExploring the Meaning of Quality from Urban Space Users’ Viewpoint by Analyzing Conceptual Environment Codes
The main purpose of urban design is to create good and high-quality urban spaces and environments for people to live while such quality may not be determined only by imposing a structural, perceptual and value system of the designer. It can be said that human and his powers to perceive surrounding environments are the focus of urban design. Having reviewed previous researches and theories in re...
متن کاملIncorporating Perceptual Task Effort into the Recognition of Intention in Information Graphics
The rapidly increasing availability of electronic publications containing information graphics poses some interesting challenges in terms of information access. For example, visually impaired individuals should ideally be provided with access to the knowledge that would be gleaned from viewing the information graphic. Similarly, digital libraries must take into account the content of informatio...
متن کاملExplanation of affecting factors on Perceptual organization pattern of district 1 of contemporary Tehran based on pattern language theory
District 1 of Tehran had experienced many changes during past few decades and much of these changes, had included few tangible matters, and never considered public’s concept of urban system pattern. The present study, tried to explain pattern language system of district 1 of Tehran, based Christopher Alexander’s theory of pattern language and adapt this theory to public’s concepts. This purpose...
